Situated on a large lot along the shore of serene Lake Squalicum in rural Whatcom County, Washington this residence is comprised of a series of forms and spaces, grouped around a central circulation spine. This spine not only serves as the horizontal and vertical circulation within the home, but also as the Owners’ art gallery. The space, which flares as it opens to the lake, culminates in a dramatic wall of glass. The project includes the main residence along with a detached garage/shop and a guest house. The guest house is available for rent as a bed and breakfast. The structures were thoughtfully placed in the natural environment to retain as many of the mature Douglas Firs and as much native vegetation as possible. The home’s modern forms take on a sculptural feel which at once contrasts and harmonizes with the natural site.
