Set on a heavily forested hillside in rural Fall City, Washington, this contemporary home has been designed to capture views of the sun rising over the Cascade foothills and the snow-capped summits beyond. The owners wanted their master suite to feel separate from the rest of the home, a feeling that was achieved by placing the suite in its own volume connected to the main house with a windowed gallery space filled with light and casework for the display of art and books. The master suite is set on piers that allow the volume to float above and into the forest; an open wood deck cantilevers even further into the natural landscape. The entry, living room, kitchen, dining room, and office spaces take the opposite approach, being totally open to one another. Because of this openness, all of these spaces enjoy the easterly view of the rising sun which is so prized by the owners. The exterior is composed of a restrained yet elegant pallet of tongue and groove cedar siding, stone masonry, and corrugated metal siding. While the forms of the home create an icon in the landscape the natural materials harmonize with the natural setting of this custom home.
